A job application is the process by which a student applies for a job or position. This process includes, for example, updating the resume, sending a cover letter and an interview with the potential employer. The aim is to convince the employer that the student is suitable for the position and has the right qualifications and experience. During an interview, the two parties get to know each other better and decide whether they are a suitable match.
There are several ways to use an application as a form of test:
- An application assignment – set up an assignment that requires students to go through a complete application, including cover letter and CV. This can be assessed on elements such as language skills, structure of the document and relevance to the assignment.
- A role-play – have students in groups simulate a job interview and assess them on aspects such as communication skills, self-presentation and ability to answer questions.
- Written analysis – ask students to write an analysis of a cover letter and CV, assessing aspects such as style, structure and content.
Tip: as an assignment, have your students respond to a real vacancy in their field.
You can include these activities as part of a larger project or as separate tests. It is important to establish clear criteria and assessment guidelines to ensure consistent assessment.
