Research project

A research project is a comprehensive, systematic research activity in which your students independently or in groups investigate and solve a research question. It is an assessment form that gives students the opportunity to develop and demonstrate their research skills, by conducting an investigation from start to finish. In addition, students practice working in project format, which is often a realistic way of working in later careers.

Examples of research projects include: research on the effects of social media on political participation, research on the impact of climate change on farming communities, research on methods to synthesise new substances, or research on the comparison of conventional and new methods of waste disposal.

To use a research project as a form of assessment, you can go through the following steps:

  1. Identify a research topic that is relevant to the students’ field of study and will enable them to apply their knowledge and skills.
  2. Provide guidelines for the research, including expected length, required sources and expected results.
  3. Assess the research based on the guidelines and results and provide feedback on the strength and weakness of the research.
  4. Determine the assessment of the research project, taking into account factors such as the quality of the research question, methods, results and conclusions.

Individual phases of a research project can also be used as stand-alone assignments or projects as assessment tool. Examples include drafting problem statements and research questions, doing a literature review or meta-analysis, drafting a research approach, analysing data, drawing conclusions from data or interpreting conclusions, stating limitations of a study, criticising results of research or impact of research. In almost all cases, a process of giving peer feedback can be part it the project.
