Freedom and frameworks: Free assignments in teaching and asssessment

In the first-year course Ethnographic Monographs of the bachelor’s programme Social and Cultural Anthropology, students experiment with ways to convey a message.
Students work together on a project, exploring the effect of a jointly chosen form on how a message comes across. This has resulted in creative end products such as short films and poems. In a reflection report, students justify the choices made, reflect on what they have learned from them and how this relates to the learning objectives of the course.
Awareness of learning objectives and the freedom to choose a final product form stimulates ownership of the learning process.
