A workplace assessment, such as an internship, is a way to evaluate students’ performance and knowledge gained, in a professional context, and how they apply it. During an internship, students often work in a company, organisation or institution, and learn how work is done in practice. You can assess this in various ways, such as a written report, an oral presentation, a reflection form, assessment form, practical test, portfolio or an observation.
There are several things you can test for in an internship, depending on the context and purpose of the internship. Some examples:
- Practical skills: you test whether students are able to apply the skills and techniques they have learned, in practice.
- Problem solving: you assess students’ ability to solve problems in the work environment.
- Communication skills: you assess how students communicate with colleagues, supervisors and customers.
- Independence: you assess students’ independence in work and how they take responsibility and intiative.
- Professionalism: you assess the students’ behaviour and attitude in the work environment, and whether they behave professionally.
- Reflection: you evaluate students’ ability to reflect on their own work and learn from their experiences.
Tip: in medical education at co-supervisions, portfolio systems for programme-based testing such as Scorion are increasingly used.
