In a skills assessment, you test the proficiency of your students in a specific subject or field. Usually, it involves a topic or professional situation where the student must address actions according to standardized protocols or familiar problem situations. It often also involves a combination of cognitive and motor skills.
There are different types of skills that can be assessed, depending on the field or context. There are subject-specific skills, but also cross-curricular, interdisciplinary, and academic skills that are important. Some examples:
- Language skills such as reading, writing correctly and at a certain level, listening and speaking or presenting, in one’s own or another language.
- Technical skills such as using specific software or tools, for example in engineering or computer science.
- Practical skills such as conducting experiments, solving practical problems, and using measuring instruments.
- Social-emotional skills such as communication, collaboration, conflict resolution, leadership, and self-control.
- Study skills such as planning, responsibility, focus, motivation, and reflection skills.
